Anselm. 2023. Germany. Directed by Wim Wenders. 3D. DCP. Courtesy Sideshow/Janus Films. In German; English subtitles. 93 min.
Wim Wenders—subject of a major MoMA retrospective in 2015 and soon to be represented in MoMA’s To Save and Project this January—returns with this extraordinary 3D documentary about the German artist Anselm Kiefer. Friendship and artistic collaboration are synonymous in Wenders’s work, as we have seen in his illuminating and loving documentary portraits of Nicholas Ray, the German choreographer Pina Bausch, the Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto, the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, and now Wenders’s German contemporary, Kiefer. In Anselm, Wenders returns to the 3D format to do justice to the materiality, depth, and epic scale of Kiefer’s sculptural paintings and other installation work. Wenders and Kiefer, both now 78, reflect on the place of the artist in the aftermath of Nazism and the Holocaust, on the divergent paths they each took in their lives and their work, and on the relationship of history and mythmaking to the creative act.
