MAJOR PUBLICATION ACCOMPANIES ARCHITECTURE EXHIBITION AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
The fully illustrated catalogue The Un-Private House, written by Terence Riley, Chief Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, accompanies the exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art. On view from July 1 to October 5, 1999, The Un-Private House features 26 contemporary homes by a diverse group of international architects. The selections reflect the recent transformation of the private house in response to evolving architectural theory and changing ways of living.
The catalogue complements the exhibition and is a valuable anthology of 26 innovative projects in contemporary domestic architecture by architecture firms in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Two hundred-seventy illustrations, 99 color reproductions, detailed floor plans and elevations, computer renderings, and some never-before-seen photographs provide a comprehensive examination of the homes. The catalog is made possible by Elise Jaffe and Jeffrey Brown.
An extensive essay by Mr. Riley traces the changing role of the private home since its inception, explores the cultural conditions affecting contemporary domestic architecture, and engages some of the first architectural debates of the twenty-first century. Among the topics Mr. Riley addresses are issues of privacy, new demographic patterns, changing concepts of work and leisure, and the incorporation of new media into the home. Mr. Riley also discusses the featured selection of projects as “a bellwether of the current state of architecture and a harbinger of its future direction.” Twenty-six project descriptions explore both the architectural theories and the practical considerations behind the homes, and incorporate quotes by the architects.
The exhibition is made possible by The Lily Auchincloss Fund for Contemporary Architecture, and is the first in a series of five exhibitions to be supported by this program. The interactive environment of the exhibition was jointly developed by the MIT Media Lab and The Museum of Modern Art and generously supported by Max Palevsky. Generous support for the installation design is provided by Furniture Co. The accompanying publication is made possible by Elise Jaffe and Jeffrey Brown. The symposium is made possible by Philips Electronics. Additional funding is provided by an anonymous donor, NEC Technologies, the Norman and Rosita Winston Foundation, The Contemporary Arts Council of The Museum of Modern Art, Nearlife, Inc., and the Consulate General of The Netherlands in New York.
